Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-086 Old Lace – brush-on glaze with controllable coverage
With Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-086 Old Lace you decorate ceramics with a brush: for fine lines, details and multicoloured designs on wet clay and bisque. The glaze is highly pigmented and thick. According to Mayco, colours can be placed side by side without running. It fires glossy, so you do not need a clear glaze.
You control the coverage through the number of coats: one coat looks translucent, and Mayco recommends 2–3 coats for full coverage. All colours in the series can be mixed with one another. Thinned with water, it gives a wash or watercolour effect for soft gradients.
Applying the glaze
Stir the glaze well before use. On bisque, remove dust with a damp sponge. Then apply a first coat with a brush and let it dry before adding the next. For a solid, opaque surface, allow for 2–3 coats. If you only want a translucent colour wash, one coat is enough, or you can thin it with water. For multicoloured designs, place the colours directly next to each other.
Firing and colour effect
Stroke & Coat is designed to mature at cone 06/05, which corresponds roughly to the earthenware range (cone 06: approx. 998 °C, cone 05: approx. 1031 °C, both guide values per Orton chart). If you fire in the stoneware range, for example at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), colours may change: dark shades become darker and light ones fade. Mayco therefore recommends a test piece. The glaze is suitable for oxidation and reduction firing.
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means: exempt from hazard labelling.
