Botz liquid glaze 9470 Bärenfell – satin brown with black speckles

Botz liquid glaze 9470 Bärenfell is an opaque glaze for earthenware in a natural reddish brown with black speckles. The surface fires to a satin finish, and the speckles give it a lively, textured look. It suits bowls, mugs, figures or decorative pieces that are meant to have an earthy, fur-like look.

The glaze is stable within a firing range of 1020–1060 °C, and according to Botz it can be fired up to 1100 °C. You therefore do not need a high-temperature kiln; an earthenware kiln is sufficient.

Applying the glaze

The glaze is applied to bisque-fired ceramics. The bisque firing should have been carried out at a minimum of 950 °C so that the clay body absorbs the glaze well.

• Stir the glaze well, as colour pigments and speckles settle
• Dilute with a little water if needed
• Apply evenly to the bisque-fired ceramics with a brush
• Leave to dry thoroughly and apply another coat if needed

Firing and result

Fire the glaze within the range of 1020–1060 °C, where it is stable according to Botz. The speckles are a design feature of this shade, so black dots on reddish brown are part of the look. How strongly they show in your case is best seen on a test piece made from your own clay and fired with your kiln programme. Leave the foot of the piece unglazed or wipe it clean so that nothing sticks to the kiln shelf.
