Botz liquid glaze 9592 Sommeraster – glossy yellow with red speckles
Sommeraster (9592) is a ready-to-use earthenware liquid glaze from Botz for bisque-fired ceramics. It gives a warm, glossy, opaque yellow with large, strong red speckles. The speckles make every piece one of a kind: the distribution and size of the red dots vary from piece to piece.
The glaze is stable in the firing range of 1020–1060 °C. So you fire it in the same range as many other earthenware glazes and can combine it with matching glazes in the same kiln load. As it is opaque, bowls, cups, decorative plates or figures look evenly coloured after firing, and the clay body does not show through.
Applying the glaze
The glaze is ready to use. Proceed step by step:
- Bisque fire the ceramics at 950 °C minimum
- Stir the glaze well so that the colour particles settled at the bottom are evenly distributed again
- Thin with a little water if needed
- Apply with a brush to the bisque-fired ceramics and leave to dry thoroughly
- Apply a further coat if needed
- Fire in the range of 1020–1060 °C
Tips for an even result
Apply each coat evenly and leave it to dry completely before the next one, otherwise streaks and patches of uneven thickness will appear. Stay within the stated range when firing, as this is where the glaze is stable. A test piece will show you beforehand how the red speckles turn out with your clay and your application.
