Botz 9221 Vogelei liquid glaze – satin beige with brown speckles
Botz 9221 Vogelei liquid glaze is a ready-to-use glaze for earthenware: a classic beige with brown speckles, satin and opaque. You apply it with a brush to bisque-fired ceramic. It looks particularly good on red and black clay.
The firing range is 1020–1060 °C, and the glaze is stable within this range. If needed, you can also fire it up to 1100 °C. This is handy if you want to load pieces with other glazes from the earthenware 1020–1100 °C group into the same kiln.
Applying the glaze
The glaze is intended for bisque-fired ceramic, which should have been bisque-fired at 950 °C or above. Then proceed as follows:
- Stir the glaze well so that the settled particles are brought back into suspension.
- If it is too thick, thin it with a little water.
- Apply it to the ceramic with a brush and let it dry thoroughly.
- If needed, apply another coat, let it dry thoroughly again and then fire.
Effect and choosing from the range
The brown speckles develop during firing and give the beige surface some texture. As the glaze is opaque, it mainly determines the colour, while the clay underneath adds the accent: Vogelei looks particularly good on red and black clay. A test piece on your own clay will show you beforehand how dense the speckles become with your application thickness and firing temperature. The same series includes darker shades: 9222 Granitbraun is a very dark blackish brown, and 9224 Aventurin is a glossy reddish-brown glaze with a sparkle effect. Vogelei, by contrast, is the light, calm variant.
