Botz Liquid Glaze 9533 Eisenstein – Satin Aventurine with Cracks
Botz liquid glaze 9533 Eisenstein is a satin, semi-transparent glaze for earthenware. It gives an aventurine finish with striking amber speckles. At 1020 °C the colour fires darker. The glaze is stable within the firing range of 1020–1060 °C.
Eisenstein tends to crackle: fine cracks form in the glaze layer. They appear because the glaze and the clay body shrink by different amounts as they cool, and here they are part of the effect. As the glaze is semi-transparent, the colour of your clay shows through: on a light clay body the speckles look clearer, on dark clay they look deeper. A test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand how the glaze looks on it.
Application
The glaze is intended for bisque-fired ceramics. The bisque firing should be at 950 °C or higher so that the clay body takes up the glaze well.
- Stir the glaze well before use.
- Thin with a little water if needed.
- Apply with a brush to the bisque-fired piece.
- Leave to dry thoroughly and apply another coat if needed.
Firing and finish
Fire the glaze within the firing range of 1020–1060 °C. If you want the darker version of the colour, fire at 1020 °C. Do not apply it too thickly: an even coat gives a more uniform look in which the speckles and cracks stand out clearly. This glaze is one of the glazes for earthenware. For stoneware with higher firing temperatures you will need stoneware glazes.
