Botz Craquelé transparent 9351 – glossy crackle glaze with a fine network of cracks
Botz liquid glaze 9351 Craquelé transparent is a glossy, transparent crackle glaze for bisque-fired ceramics. As it cools, it forms a fine network of cracks that you can then colour in. It is designed for the firing range 1020–1060 °C and is suitable for raku.
Because the glaze is transparent, the colour of your clay or engobe application shows through. The crackle appears because glaze and clay body shrink at different rates as they cool. A test piece made from your clay will show you beforehand what the crack pattern looks like in your case.
Applying the glaze
The glaze runs a lot. So apply it only once and do not layer it.
- Stir the glaze well and thin with a little water if needed.
- Apply with a brush to bisque-fired ceramics (bisque firing at 950 °C minimum). According to the manufacturer's experience, bisque firing at 1000 °C helps prevent blistering.
- Leave to dry thoroughly and fire in the firing range 1020–1060 °C.
- Leave the foot of the piece unglazed and protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash so that nothing sticks.
Watch out for blisters
When applied on both sides, for example inside and out, the glaze tends to blister on some clays. It is best to glaze such pieces on one side only, or test the clay beforehand on a test piece.
Developing and colouring the cracks
The cracks usually form as the piece cools in the kiln and become more pronounced over time. This can take up to a week. If no cracks appear, you can take the piece out of the kiln at approx. 100 °C and quench it in cold water. To make the cracks visible, rub black ink, coloured acrylic paints or strong black tea into the crack network, then wipe the surface clean.
