Mayco UG-229 Aquamarine – turquoise underglaze for ceramics
Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-229 Aquamarine is a turquoise underglaze that you use to decorate ceramics before the glaze firing. You apply it to greenware or bisque. According to Mayco, it also works on wet or leather-hard clay, which you then fire to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The colour is intended for patterns, lines and solid areas, such as floral or maritime designs.
Without glaze, the underglaze fires matt. A clear or matt glaze over the top intensifies the colour. If the piece is to be used as tableware, you will need one anyway: the underglaze is only dinnerware safe under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without clear glaze it is not considered dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the ACMI AP seal means: no hazard labelling.
How to apply the underglaze
Shake the jar well before use. One coat looks translucent; for full opacity and a strong turquoise, apply 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry before applying the next. The colours in the range can be mixed with each other if you want to alter the shade.
- Do not spray; apply with a brush
- Work thinly for fine lines and graphic patterns
- For solid areas, build up several even coats
Firing and glaze
Mayco gives cone 06 to cone 10 as the firing range. The underglazes are formulated for low temperatures, but according to Mayco most colours stay stable at higher temperatures too. A test with your own clay and kiln will show how Aquamarine behaves at your temperature. You can fire the clear glaze in the same firing. According to Mayco, a 15-minute hold helps if blisters or craters appear.
