Mayco Underglaze UG-228 Midnight Blue – dark blue underglaze for ceramics

Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-228 Midnight Blue is a dark blue underglaze for ceramics. You apply it to greenware or bisque for shading, outlines, patterns, floral motifs or solid areas of colour. According to Mayco, it can also be applied to wet or leather-hard clay and then fired to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart).

One coat is translucent; with 2–3 coats the colour gives full cover. Without glaze it fires matt. Under a clear or matt glaze the colour becomes more intense, and under a clear glaze the blue looks glossy and deep. The colours in the series can be mixed with one another.

Using the underglaze

Shake the jar well before use and apply the colour with a brush. Let each coat dry to the touch before applying the next. For a strong midnight blue you need 2–3 coats; with just one coat the colour stays translucent. According to Mayco, it is not intended for spraying.

• Surface: greenware or bisque; wet or leather-hard clay is fired to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
• Firing range: cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
• Clear glaze in the same firing is possible; for blisters or craters, according to Mayco, a hold time of 15 minutes helps

Colour behaviour and dinnerware

At cone 6 oxidising, the colour stays unchanged according to Mayco; at cone 10 reducing, it becomes more concentrated. Test the colour with your own clay and in your own kiln. For dinnerware: the underglaze is only dinnerware safe under a transparent clear glaze suitable for dinnerware. Without a clear glaze this does not apply. According to ACMI, the ACMI AP seal means that no hazard labelling is required.
