Botz PRO 9302 Achatgrau – grey glaze for earthenware, stoneware and porcelain
Botz PRO 9302 Achatgrau is a glossy grey liquid glaze for earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. It can be used across a very wide firing range of 1020 to 1280 °C, so you do not need to buy a different glaze for every type of clay. The glaze is made in Germany and, according to the manufacturer, combines well with Botz Unidekor.
How the glaze looks depends on the firing temperature: in the earthenware range from 1020 °C it is coloured and almost opaque. On early-vitrifying clays at around 1150 °C the surface turns more semi-transparent. In a high firing it gives a glassy, semi-transparent surface in intense pastel shades.
Application and firing by temperature
Apply the glaze to the bisque-fired, dust-free clay body, and stir it well beforehand. The number of coats depends on the firing temperature:
- Earthenware from 1020 °C: 2–3 coats, the result is coloured and almost opaque
- Early-vitrifying clays at around 1150 °C: 2 coats, the colour is retained and the surface becomes more semi-transparent
- Stoneware in a high firing up to 1280 °C: glassy, semi-transparent surface in intense pastel shades
- Porcelain at 1250 °C: good results according to the manufacturer
Avoiding runs
The glaze tends to run when applied thickly. Leave the foot of the piece unglazed or apply a thinner coat towards the bottom, and apply each coat only once the previous one has dried on. Stand the piece on a kiln shelf protected with kiln wash, in case any glaze does run. Where the effect is semi-transparent, the colour of the clay influences the result; a test piece on your own clay shows you the look in advance.
