Botz stoneware glaze 9897 Lilaeffekt – matt lavender effect glaze

Botz stoneware glaze 9897 Lilaeffekt is a liquid, matt lavender effect glaze for stoneware firing between 1220 and 1280 °C. It has a blue base with light and dark lilac effects, which show up especially well when the glaze is applied thinly.

The colour depends on the firing temperature: at 1220 °C the lilac looks slightly bluer. At 1250 °C it gives a matt, light lilac glaze. At 1280 °C the lilac turns slightly redder. If you want to control the shade, it is best to fire a test piece in your own clay at the temperature your kiln reaches. Fired within the firing range, the stoneware is frost-proof and vitrified according to Botz, so it does not absorb water.

Application and firing

Stir the glaze well before use. Apply it with a brush to a dust-free, bisque-fired piece and let each coat dry thoroughly.

• Application: 2 to 3 coats, preferably 3; only 2 coats on the lower part of the piece

• Recommended firing temperature: 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold

Preventing runs

The glaze tends to run. Apply it more thinly on the lower third of the piece and leave the foot unglazed. Applying too thickly and firing at too high a temperature both encourage running, so 1250 °C is a safe starting point. Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash or a layer of kiln shelf protection so that any glaze that runs does not stick. If you want to see the blue-based effects, apply a little more thinly; for a more even, light lilac, apply 3 coats.
