Botz 9888 Granitschwarz stoneware glaze – satin black with light effects
Botz 9888 Granitschwarz is a liquid, opaque glaze for stoneware. It fires to a satin black with light effects. You fire it within a range of 1220 to 1280 °C. The glaze is ready to use; you only need to stir it well.
The light effects appear as small precipitates breaking through the black surface. This makes the result look livelier than a plain black. The firing temperature determines how pronounced the gloss and the effects are.
How the glaze looks at different temperatures
Granitschwarz changes with the firing temperature. Plan your firing according to the surface you want.
- 1220 °C: soft matt black with small light precipitates
- 1250 °C to 1280 °C: satin black glaze with light effects
- 1250 °C with a 30 min hold is recommended
Application and firing
Stir the glaze thoroughly before use, as glaze particles settle at the bottom. Apply it with a brush in 2 to 3 coats, preferably three, and let each coat dry well. A thicker layer gives the even opacity of a rich black. Thin patches show up more easily with dark glazes.
Tips for a clean result
Leave the foot of the piece unglazed and, if needed, protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash so that nothing sticks. The light effects develop during firing and cannot be placed deliberately. A tension swatch is not needed here, but a test tile made from your own clay will show you beforehand how gloss and effects turn out in your kiln and with your firing schedule. Fired within its firing range, stoneware becomes vitrified and frost-resistant, so the glaze also suits vessels and decorative pieces for outdoors.
