Botz stoneware glaze 9875 Kaktusgrün – opaque, glossy medium green

Botz stoneware glaze 9875 Kaktusgrün is a liquid, medium green glaze for stoneware in the firing range 1220–1280 °C. It gives good coverage and a glossy finish, and leaves your pieces with a rich, even green.

Thanks to the high firing temperature, the stoneware becomes vitrified, absorbs no water and is frostproof. At 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold you get the full gloss. If you only fire to 1220 °C, the surface looks more satin. This way you control the level of gloss through the firing temperature.

Applying the glaze

Stir the glaze thoroughly before use so that the settled particles are brought back into suspension. Apply 2 to 3 coats with a brush to the clean, dust-free clay body and let each coat dry well. Several thin coats give a more even result than one thick application, which is more likely to run or pool during firing. Leave the foot of the piece unglazed or wipe it clean so that nothing fuses to the kiln shelf.

Firing and choosing a glaze

Kaktusgrün is made for stoneware in the range 1220–1280 °C. For clay bodies that fire at lower temperatures, such as earthenware, you need a glaze from a different firing range. Your clay must suit the firing temperature. A test piece shows you beforehand how the green looks on your clay and in your kiln. The Botz stoneware glaze series includes further colours and effects, so you can combine Kaktusgrün with other glazes for the same firing range.
