Botz stoneware glaze 9877 Schwarz glänzend – opaque and speckled

Botz stoneware glaze 9877 Schwarz glänzend is a liquid glaze for ceramics with a firing range of 1220–1280 °C. It gives a glossy, opaque black surface with a speckled, textured effect. Stoneware fired at these high temperatures is frost-proof and watertight, and does not absorb water.

As the glaze is opaque, the clay body hardly shows through. How pronounced the speckles and textures are depends on the thickness of application and the firing temperature. A test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand how the glaze looks in your kiln.

Applying and firing the glaze

Stir the glaze well before use, as the pigments settle at the bottom. Apply it with a brush to bisque-fired, dust-free ware. Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next.

• 2–3 coats with a brush, applied evenly and not too thickly
• Firing range: 1220–1280 °C
• Recommended firing temperature: 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold
• When firing at 1280 °C, apply the glaze more thinly towards the bottom of the piece so that it does not run

Choosing from the range

This glaze belongs to the Botz stoneware glaze series, which also includes Ultramarin, Weiß glänzend, Zinnoberrot, Kaktusgrün and Craquelé, among others. 9877 Schwarz glänzend gives you a dark, smooth, glossy surface that combines well with lighter glazes from the same firing range. They are all fired in the same range, but when combining glazes, check on test pieces that they do not run into each other. The same glaze is also available in 800 ml; the 200 ml size is enough for smaller pieces and tests.
