Botz 9596 Sonnenfeuer liquid glaze – strong yellow with a textured surface
Botz 9596 Sonnenfeuer liquid glaze is a strong yellow, glossy glaze for bisque-fired ceramics. It covers well and develops a lively, textured to lightly speckled surface in the kiln. The firing range is 1020–1060 °C, and the glaze is also suitable for raku.
As the glaze is supplied as a liquid, you apply it straight from the pot with a brush. It can be combined with the Botz glazes 9597, 9606 and 9607, which Botz lists as sister glazes. This lets you use yellow together with matching colours, for example for accents or colour gradients.
Applying the glaze
Stir the glaze thoroughly, as the pigments settle in the container. If it is too thick, you can thin it with a little water. Apply it with a brush to the bisque-fired piece. The bisque firing should have reached at least 950 °C. Let each coat dry well and repeat the application if needed. Applying several coats gives a more even and stronger colour.
Firing and effect
Sonnenfeuer is stable in the firing range of 1020–1060 °C. If possible, fire the glaze with a supply of oxygen, or place the pieces loosely in the kiln so that the kiln atmosphere can circulate. The surface texture is part of the glaze: it is not evenly smooth but looks slightly speckled. For evenly smooth, single-colour surfaces, it is better to choose a different glaze. A small test piece on your own clay will show you in advance how the yellow turns out.
Combining and raku
The glaze is suitable for raku. You can combine it with 9597, 9606 and 9607 from the same series, for example for colour transitions or decoration on a single piece.
