Botz Stoneware Engobe 9823 Tropic, 800 ml

Botz Stoneware Engobe 9823 Tropic – purple engobe for stoneware, matt or glossy under glaze

Botz stoneware engobe 9823 Tropic is a purple liquid engobe for decorating ceramics, stable in the firing range 1180–1280 °C. Without glaze it has a soft matt, earthy finish with good opacity and sharp contours. Under a transparent glaze such as Botz 9300 or 9870, the purple becomes intense, vivid and glossy. According to Botz, the engobes are recommended for tableware when combined with a suitable glaze, depending on the glaze.

9823 Tropic belongs to the Botz Edition of 15 stoneware engobes. The colours can be mixed with one another, so you can create your own in-between shades. According to Botz, they also cover well on dark clay bodies. The tub contains 800 ml, which suits larger quantities or many pieces.

Application

Stir the engobe well before use. Apply it in 2–3 coats to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay and let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. Several thin coats cover more evenly than one thick application, which is more likely to crack or flake off as it dries.

Matt or glossy: with and without glaze

Applied on its own, 9823 Tropic stays matt. For a glossy, intense surface, apply one coat of transparent glaze over the engobe; Botz shows Transparent 9300 or 9870 as examples. The glaze affects gloss and colour, so a test piece made with your own clay and glaze will show you beforehand how the purple looks in your work.

• Without glaze: soft matt, earthy, sharp contours
• With transparent glaze: glossy, vivid
• Firing in the range 1180–1280 °C, Botz shows examples fired at 1250 °C
