Botz Stoneware Engobe 9808 Schwarz – opaque engobe for stoneware

Botz stoneware engobe 9808 Schwarz is a liquid, opaque engobe for painting and decorating stoneware. It is designed for the firing range 1180–1280 °C and comes in a 200 ml tin. The same shade is also available in 800 ml.

Without glaze it fires to a soft matt, earthy finish with good coverage and crisp contours. Black lines, areas and patterns therefore stay cleanly defined. Under a clear glaze, for example Botz 9300 or 9870, the black becomes intense and glossy.

Applying the engobe

Stir the engobe well before use so that the pigment is evenly distributed. Apply it with a brush to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay and let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. For a rich, solid black you will usually need 2–3 coats.

Matt or glossy – and mixing

The glaze decides how the surface looks: applied on its own, the engobe stays matt; under a clear glaze it becomes glossy. The engobe can be mixed with other colours from the Botz edition, so you can create your own shades. Note down the mixing ratios so that you can match the shade again later. A test piece on your own clay shows you how coverage and surface turn out before you start on the actual piece.
