Mayco SW-193 Ivy – glossy stoneware glaze in variegated green

Mayco Stoneware SW-193 Ivy is a glossy, opaque stoneware glaze in variegated green with an iridescent sheen. You apply it to bisque-fired ceramics. The jar contains 473 ml (16 fl oz).

The firing result depends on the atmosphere. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in oxidation, Mayco describes a variegated, i.e. flowing, green with an iridescent sheen in which green micro-crystals can form. At cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in reduction, it becomes a variegated jade green that breaks violet over textures. The glaze therefore picks out reliefs and textures with a lively effect.

Application and firing

Ivy is applied to bisque. For Mayco, that is a firing in the cone 04 to 06 range. Stir the glaze well before use to bring the settled pigments back into suspension.

• Apply one to three even coats, letting each coat dry before the next
• Do not spray
• Bisque firing: cone 06 (approx. 998 °C) or cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C), guide values per Orton chart
• Glaze firing: Mayco describes the results at cone 6 in oxidation and cone 10 in reduction

Fluid glaze: avoiding running and pinholes

Mayco points out that Ivy is fluid. On vertical surfaces, apply it in decreasing layers, thinner towards the bottom, so that nothing runs. Also leave the foot of the piece unglazed and protect the kiln shelf. Take care when combining it with other glazes. On clays containing manganese, Ivy tends to pinhole, meaning tiny holes in the surface. A test tile made from your own clay will show you beforehand how the colour and surface turn out.

Dinnerware and safety
