Mayco SW-165 Lavender Mist – semi-opaque gloss stoneware glaze in lavender

Mayco SW-165 Lavender Mist is a semi-opaque, glossy stoneware glaze in lavender with brown tones, which you apply to bisque-fired ceramics. It is available in 473 ml (16 fl oz) and belongs to the Mayco Stoneware series.

According to Mayco, at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidising firing the glaze is semi-opaque with lavender and brown tones. The thicker you apply it, the more opaque and even the colour looks. At cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in a reducing firing it becomes darker. So you can use the thickness of the coats and the type of firing to control whether you get a light lavender or a darker tone.

Application

The glaze is applied to bisque-fired ceramics and is not sprayed on. Stir it well before use, as the colour pigments settle at the bottom.

• Dust the bisque-fired piece and dampen it lightly
• Stir well and apply 2–3 even coats with a brush
• Let each coat dry completely before applying the next
• Keep the base and foot free of glaze so that the piece does not stick to the kiln shelf
• Fire in the mid-range between cone 6 and cone 10

Tableware and safety

According to Mayco, Lavender Mist is dinnerware safe. The glaze carries the ACMI AP (Approved Product) seal. Even so, observe the warnings about zinc and soluble copper while the glaze is liquid. Keep the container closed and out of reach of children.

Choosing from the series

Lavender Mist is the light, violet colour in the Mayco Stoneware series. For blue, turquoise or green tones, the same series includes SW-166 Norse Blue, SW-224 Tropical Teal and SW-193 Ivy, for example. A test piece on your own clay shows you beforehand how coat thickness and firing schedule change the colour.
