Botz 9869 Bergsee stoneware glaze – glassy water green with fine crackle
Bergsee (9869) is a liquid, glassy stoneware glaze from Botz in a cool, translucent water green with fine crystalline crackle. You apply it with a brush and fire it in the stoneware range from 1220 to 1280 °C. At this temperature the glaze becomes vitrified, frost-proof and no longer absorbs water.
The colour effect depends on the firing temperature: at 1220 °C the surface is not completely smooth and shows an intense turquoise tone. At 1250 °C it becomes smooth, with deep crackle and a celadon tone. At 1280 °C it is even glassier and slightly greenish. The glaze is semi-transparent, so the colour of your clay shows through. A test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand how it looks on your work.
Using Bergsee
Stir the glaze well before application so that settled particles are brought back into suspension. Then apply 2 to 3 coats with a brush, letting each coat dry thoroughly. Several coats give an even glaze thickness.
- Stir the glaze well
- Apply 2 to 3 coats, letting it dry thoroughly in between
- Recommended firing temperature 1250 °C with a 30 min hold
Preventing runs
Bergsee tends to run, especially at 1280 °C. Apply the glaze more thinly towards the bottom of the piece and leave the foot unglazed, otherwise it may flow onto the kiln shelf. Also protect the kiln shelf with a suitable kiln wash.
Which temperature for which look?
For a strong turquoise tone with a slightly textured surface, fire at 1220 °C. If you want a smooth surface with deep crackle and a calm celadon green, choose 1250 °C. At 1280 °C the glaze becomes glassier and a lighter greenish colour, and the risk of running increases.
