Botz PRO 9308 Carneolgelb – yellow glaze for earthenware and stoneware
Botz PRO 9308 Carneolgelb is a yellow, glossy brush-on liquid glaze for earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. It is ready to use and comes in an 800 ml tin. The PRO series has a wide firing range of 1020 to 1280 °C: one glaze covers both earthenware firing and high-fire, and the effect changes with the temperature.
Carneolgelb is one of the five colours in the series, which is available in 200 ml and 800 ml. According to Botz, the colours are suitable for RAKU and combine well with Botz Unidekor.
Effect by firing temperature
The glaze changes its appearance with the firing temperature. Botz recommends a firing temperature of 1050 °C for earthenware and 1250 °C for stoneware, each with a hold time of 10–20 minutes.
- From 1020 °C (earthenware): strong, almost opaque colour; apply 2–3 coats
- Around 1150 °C (early-vitrifying clays): the colour is retained and the surface becomes more semi-transparent; apply 2 coats
- High-fire around 1250 °C: glassy, semi-transparent surface in pastel shades, with good results on porcelain too
Application and avoiding runs
Stir the glaze well before brushing it on and apply it in coats. Leave the glaze to dry for a day before firing. Applied thickly, Carneolgelb tends to run. Apply it fairly thinly on the lower part of the piece, leave the foot ring unglazed and stand the piece on a kiln shelf protected with kiln wash. Make sure the firing area is well ventilated.
Use on tableware
Botz recommends PRO glazes for tableware from approx. 1200 °C. In the earthenware range of 1020–1100 °C, many clays are not yet watertight: you should not use such ceramics to hold liquids for long periods, and you should not leave them outdoors in frost. Botz recommends hand washing. According to the manufacturer, all Botz products are exempt from hazard labelling.
