Botz Stoneware Glaze 9895 Sandgranit – satin sand yellow with black speckles
Botz stoneware glaze 9895 Sandgranit is a liquid, satin stoneware glaze in sand yellow with fine black speckles, for firings in the range 1220–1280 °C. It is opaque, and the speckles remain visible as a fine texture on the surface.
At this high firing temperature the stoneware becomes vitrified and frost-proof and cannot absorb water. The glaze is stable across the whole firing range, but the colour effect changes with the temperature.
Colour by firing temperature
Depending on the firing, Sandgranit shows three different looks. It is best fired at 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold, which gives the typical sand yellow surface with black speckles.
- 1220 °C: satin matt egg-yolk yellow
- 1250 °C: satin sand yellow with fine black speckles
- 1280 °C: satin pastel yellow with fine light and black speckles
Applying the glaze
Stir the glaze well before use, as the particles settle. Apply it with a brush to the bisque-fired, dust-free clay body in 2 to 3 coats, ideally 3, and let each coat dry thoroughly. An even coat thickness gives a more consistent speckle pattern. Leave the foot unglazed or wipe it clean so that the piece does not stick to the kiln shelf.
Choosing from the range
Because the colour changes noticeably with the temperature, it is worth making a test piece in your own clay and with your own firing programme. The series includes other shades such as Ockergranit, Beigegranit and Graubasalt if you are looking for a different colour direction.
