Botz 9867 Patina stoneware glaze – matt, soft green glaze with a patina effect

Botz 9867 Patina is a liquid stoneware glaze for the firing range 1220–1280 °C. It fires matt and soft green, reminiscent of copper patina. Where it is applied thinly, for example on edges and rims, light brown effects appear that give vessels and figures depth. The glaze is opaque and comes in a 200 ml pot.

The colour changes with the temperature: at 1220 °C it appears as a light, slightly minty green. At 1280 °C the green becomes stronger and the surface more satin. If you want to keep the matt character, fire in the lower to middle part of the range. A test piece on your own clay will show you beforehand how the glaze looks for you.

Application and firing

Stir the glaze well before applying, as pigments and solids settle in the pot. Apply it with a brush to bisque-fired, dust-free ceramics and let each coat dry thoroughly.

• Fired within the firing range, the stoneware becomes vitrified, frost-proof and no longer absorbs water

Thickness of application and effect

The patina effect depends on the thickness of the layer: thinly applied areas show the light brown accents, while thickly applied areas look more evenly green. If you want to emphasise the effects on edges and reliefs, apply less glaze there than on the smooth surfaces. Wipe the foot ring clean before firing so that the piece does not stick to the kiln shelf.
