Botz Stoneware Glaze 9871 Rapsgelb – Opaque, Glossy Yellow
Botz stoneware glaze 9871 Rapsgelb is a liquid yellow glaze for stoneware, applied with a brush. It is opaque and glossy and is fired in the firing range of 1220–1280 °C. At these temperatures the glaze becomes vitrified and frost-proof and does not absorb water.
With sufficient application the glaze gives even coverage. If you apply it very thinly, the clay body shows through. At 1220 °C the surface turns out more satin-like. If you are looking for a plain yellow without variation, Rapsgelb is a good choice. The series also includes Orange (9872), Zinnoberrot (9873) and Transparent (9870), which you can use to combine or grade colours.
Applying Rapsgelb
The glaze settles in the pot, so stir it thoroughly first. Apply it with a brush to the bisque-fired, dust-free clay body. For an evenly opaque yellow, Botz recommends two to three coats, preferably three.
- Stir the glaze thoroughly
- Apply 2–3 coats with a brush, preferably 3
- Let each coat dry well before applying the next
- Wipe the foot ring clean before firing so the piece does not stick to the kiln shelf
Firing and result
Botz recommends a firing temperature of 1250 °C with a 30 min hold. The glaze is stable within the firing range of 1220–1280 °C. If you fire at the lower end, at 1220 °C, the surface looks more satin than glossy. A small test piece on your own clay will show you in advance how opacity and gloss turn out with your number of coats.
