Botz Stoneware Glaze 9893 Graubasalt – satin grey with light effects

Botz stoneware glaze 9893 Graubasalt is a liquid, opaque glaze for ceramics, fired in the stoneware range from 1220 to 1280 °C. It gives a satin grey surface with lighter effects and suits pieces meant to look calm and mineral.

The colour changes with the firing temperature. At 1220 °C it gives a satin matt, brownish grey glaze with very fine effects. At 1250 °C it becomes a brownish grey with light effects, and at 1280 °C it looks subtly greenish grey with stronger effects. Fired within the firing range, the stoneware becomes vitrified, absorbs no water and is frost-proof.

Colour effect by firing temperature

The firing temperature controls how strongly the light effects show. If you want a calmer grey, fire towards the lower end of the range.

• 1220 °C: very fine effects in a satin matt, brownish grey glaze
• 1250 °C: brownish grey with light effects (recommended firing temperature, 30 minutes hold time)
• 1280 °C: subtle, greenish grey glaze with stronger effects

Applying the glaze

Stir the glaze well before use, as the particles settle in the container. Apply it with a brush in two to three coats, preferably three, and let each coat dry thoroughly. Apply it to bisque-fired ceramics. Leave the foot of the piece free of glaze and protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash so that nothing sticks. A test piece made from your own clay shows you beforehand how the glaze looks on your clay body.
