Botz PRO 9317 Rohdiamant – semi-transparent glaze in pastel white with brown specks
Botz PRO liquid glaze 9317 Rohdiamant is a ready-to-use, glossy glaze in pastel white with fine brown specks. It is semi-transparent: the colour of your clay shows through, so the white looks clearer on a light clay body and darker on dark clay. With a firing range of 1020–1280 °C, it suits earthenware and stoneware, and at 1250 °C porcelain too. The 800 ml tub is worthwhile if you are glazing several pieces.
Botz recommends the PRO glazes for dinnerware. They are also suitable for raku and can be combined with Botz Unidekor.
Which firing temperature should you choose?
The effect of the glaze changes with the temperature. According to the Botz catalogue, the following applies to the PRO range:
- 1050 °C: strong and almost opaque, apply 2–3 coats
- 1150 °C: more semi-transparent, apply 2 coats
- 1250 °C: glassy and semi-transparent, also on porcelain
Application and avoiding runs
Stir the glaze vigorously before use. If it is too thick, add a little water. Apply 2–3 coats and let each one dry off. The glaze must be completely dry before firing. Rohdiamant tends to run when applied thickly, especially from 1150 °C. Several thin coats are therefore better than one thick one. Leave the foot of the piece unglazed and protect the kiln shelf. A test piece made from your own clay will show you how the specks look at your firing temperature.
For dinnerware
Dinnerware requires a vitrified clay body. With earthenware (1020–1100 °C), many clays are not yet watertight, and according to Botz you should not use such ceramics for liquids over a long period. Do not use matt, strongly metallic or crackle glazes for dinnerware. Anyone selling dinnerware is themselves responsible for its suitability for food contact.
