Botz PRO 9318 Calcitgelb – pastel yellow glaze with fine brown specks
Botz PRO 9318 Calcitgelb is a ready-to-use, glossy liquid glaze in pastel yellow. The surface is semi-transparent and shows fine brown specks. You can use it across a wide firing range of 1020 to 1280 °C, so for both earthenware and stoneware. According to Botz, it is suitable for raku. The tub contains 800 ml.
The result depends on the firing temperature. At 1050 °C the glaze looks almost opaque with natural brown dots. At 1150 °C it is finely speckled and more semi-transparent. At 1250 °C the surface becomes glassy and semi-transparent, and the delicate dots run a little more. Because the glaze is semi-transparent, the colour of your clay also affects the result.
Application and firing
Stir the glaze thoroughly before use. If it is too thick, add a little water. Apply it in 2–3 coats and let each coat dry slightly. The glaze must be completely dry before firing.
- 1050 °C: almost opaque, with brown dots, apply 2–3 coats
- 1150 °C: finely speckled, more semi-transparent, apply 2 coats
- 1250 °C: glassy and semi-transparent, apply 2 coats, also on porcelain
Avoiding runs
Calcitgelb runs when applied thickly, especially from 1150 °C. Apply it thinly, particularly towards the bottom of the piece, and leave the foot unglazed so that nothing sticks to the kiln shelf.
For dinnerware
Botz recommends the PRO glazes from approx. 1200 °C for dinnerware. For tableware the clay must be vitrified. Many earthenware clays (1020–1100 °C) are not yet vitrified, so such ceramics should not be used for liquids over long periods. Anyone selling tableware is responsible for its suitability for food contact. According to its catalogue (2024), Botz states that its products are exempt from hazard labelling.
