Botz Stoneware Glaze 9873 Zinnoberrot – bright medium red, glossy and opaque

Botz stoneware glaze 9873 Zinnoberrot is a liquid glaze for stoneware in a bright, medium red shade. It is opaque and glossy, and is fired in the range 1220–1280 °C. At this high temperature the clay body becomes vitrified and cannot absorb water, and it is also frost-proof. This makes the glaze suitable for vessels and garden ceramics that stand outdoors.

The glaze is ready to use and comes in an 800 ml container. A strong red like this works well on surfaces or whole pieces where the colour is meant to take centre stage.

Application and firing

Stir the glaze well before use so that settled particles are evenly redistributed. Apply it with a brush to the dry, dust-free, bisque-fired clay body. Let each coat dry well before applying the next. For a rich, even red, two to three coats are needed, ideally three.

Coat thickness and colour effect

The thickness of the application determines how the red looks. With several coats it appears opaque, glossy and bright. If applied very thinly, the glaze shows through as transparent, and the colour of your clay has a stronger influence on the result. If you want to achieve a particular effect, it is worth making a test piece from your clay with the number of coats you plan to use. A thick application can run during firing. Leave a small area at the foot of the piece unglazed.
