Botz stoneware engobe 9801 white – opaque, matt and sharp-edged
Botz stoneware engobe 9801 white is a white, opaque engobe for adding colour to stoneware clay ceramics. It is stable in the firing range of 1180 to 1280 °C, so it suits the usual stoneware firings.
Without glaze it dries and fires to a soft matt, earthy finish with good coverage and sharp contours. This makes it well suited to patterns, motifs and solid areas of decoration that need to stay clearly defined. The engobe can be mixed with other colours from the Botz Edition, so you can create your own shades.
Applying the engobe
Apply the engobe to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay. Stir it thoroughly before use, because the pigment settles at the bottom.
- Stir the engobe well
- Apply 2–3 coats
- Let each coat dry well before applying the next
- Then fire in the firing range 1180–1280 °C
Matt or glossy – choosing your finish
Applied on its own, the surface stays matt. If you cover the engobe with a clear glaze such as Botz 9300 or 9870, the white turns glossy and looks stronger. So the glaze determines the effect you get. Since engobes can be mixed with other Edition colours, you can also use the white to lighten or blend your own shades. A test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand how the coverage and surface turn out.
