Botz Stoneware Glaze 9883 Schwarzblaueffekt – glossy blue-black with light effects

Botz stoneware glaze 9883 Schwarzblaueffekt is a liquid, glossy blue-black effect glaze for the firing range 1220–1280 °C. Depending on the firing temperature and how thickly it is applied, it shows light effects and running effects that bring the surface to life.

When fired at stoneware temperatures, the stoneware becomes vitrified and frost-proof, so it does not absorb water. The glaze is opaque, so you need no more than two to three coats.

Colour effect at 1220, 1250 and 1280 °C

The glaze changes its appearance noticeably with the firing temperature. Decide beforehand which effect you want, and if necessary make a test piece from your own clay.

• 1220 °C: subtle blackish-blue glaze with small light effects
• 1250 °C (recommended, 30 minutes hold time): blue-black glaze with light effects, with attractive running effects when applied more thickly
• 1280 °C: blue-black glaze with light running effects; brown-toned where applied very thinly and on edges

Application and controlling the running

Stir the glaze well and apply two to three coats with a brush, preferably just two. Let each coat dry thoroughly. Because the glaze tends to run, at 1280 °C apply only two coats. Uneven application deliberately produces running effects; in that case, stand the piece on a waster slab or protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash. If you want calmer surfaces, apply the glaze evenly and not too thickly, and leave the foot ring free.
