Botz stoneware glaze 9861 Betongrau – satin-matt grey with a concrete look

Botz stoneware glaze 9861 Betongrau is a liquid brush-on glaze for stoneware. It gives a satin-matt grey with fine, concrete-like effects and covers well. It is fired in the range from 1220 to 1280 °C. According to Botz, it stays stable across this whole range and is recommended for dinnerware. The tin contains 800 ml.

The firing temperature determines how the grey looks. You can therefore use the temperature to control whether you want a darker, more even tone or plenty of effect. If a piece shows too much or too little effect straight away, a test piece in your own clay will help, as the colour of the clay also affects the result.

Effect at 1220, 1250 and 1280 °C

The glaze stays matt across the whole firing range, but the colour and the effects change:

• 1220 °C: darker, richer colour, more matt, less effect
• 1250 °C (recommended): medium colour, granite-matt, pleasing effects
• 1280 °C: lighter colour, glossier, plenty of effect

Applying the glaze

Stir the glaze well before use and brush it onto the bisque-fired, dust-free piece. Botz recommends two to three coats, preferably three. Three coats give an even, opaque surface. Let each coat dry well before applying the next. At 1250 °C, fire with a 30-minute hold. If you notice lighter patches on thinly glazed edges and curves, a coat has usually been missed. The 200 ml tin in the same colour suits smaller projects and test pieces.
