Botz 9890 Türkisgranit stoneware glaze – satin turquoise with pale speckles

Botz stoneware glaze 9890 Türkisgranit is a liquid glaze for stoneware in the firing range 1220–1280 °C. It gives an opaque, satin turquoise with fine pale speckles. The glaze is ready to use; just stir it well before applying.

The colour effect depends on the firing temperature, so you can control the result through the kiln. Fired within the firing range, the stoneware becomes vitrified and frost-proof, so it does not absorb water. This also makes the glaze suitable for plant pot covers and vessels used outdoors.

Firing temperature and colour effect

With this glaze, the firing temperature determines the gloss and the shade. 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold is recommended. At 1280 °C the effects become stronger, while at 1220 °C the surface stays slightly more matt:

• 1220 °C: satin-matt, greenish turquoise
• 1250 °C: satin turquoise with pale effects
• 1280 °C: stronger effects, a particularly vivid, bluish turquoise

Applying the glaze

Stir the glaze well and brush on 2 to 3 coats, preferably 3. Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. Too thin an application makes the speckles and the depth of colour look weaker. Leave the base unglazed so that the piece does not stick to the kiln shelf during firing. A test piece on your own clay will show you beforehand how the glaze looks at your firing temperature.
