Botz 9537 Mistral liquid glaze is a ready-to-use glaze for bisque-fired ceramics. It fires to a soft creamy white with medium-grey speckles spread in a floral pattern and has a satin finish. The glaze is opaque and belongs to the Botz glazes for earthenware in the 1020–1100 °C range.

Mistral is stable in the firing range of 1020–1060 °C. So you do not need to hit an exact temperature, but can fire anywhere within this range. The glaze is liquid and can be applied directly with a brush, with no need to mix it up from powder.

Applying the glaze

Mistral is applied to ceramics that have been bisque-fired at 950 °C or higher. Dust the piece first with a damp sponge so that the glaze adheres evenly.

• Stir the glaze well so that the settled particles are back in suspension
• If needed, thin with a little water
• Apply to the bisque-fired ceramics with a brush
• Leave to dry thoroughly, then apply another coat if needed
• Fire in the firing range of 1020–1060 °C

Tips for an even result

The speckles show to best effect if you apply the glaze evenly and let each coat dry completely. One thick coat often dries unevenly, and several thinner layers are usually safer. The colour effect can vary somewhat depending on the clay and the thickness of application, so a test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand how Mistral looks with it. Leave the foot of the piece free of glaze so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf during firing.
