Mayco Underglaze UG-231 Lime Green – light green underglaze for ceramics
Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-231 Lime Green is an underglaze in a bright light green, which you use to decorate ceramics before glazing. You apply it to greenware or bisque. According to Mayco, wet or leather-hard clay also works, which you then fire to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The 59 ml content corresponds to the 2 oz size in the range.
Mayco gives the firing range as cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidising atmosphere, Lime Green stays unchanged according to Mayco. At cone 10 in a reducing atmosphere, the colour turns slightly bluish. For this reason, test the colour with your own clay and in your own kiln.
Applying Lime Green
Shake the underglaze well before use. One coat looks translucent; for full opacity, apply 2–3 coats with a brush and let each coat dry to the touch. According to Mayco, spraying is only permitted with personal protective equipment. The colours in the range can be mixed with one another, so you can create your own shades of green.
With glaze, without glaze and for tableware
Without glaze, the underglaze fires matt. A clear or matt glaze over the top intensifies the colour. According to Mayco, tableware requires a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze: Lime Green is only suitable for tableware under this clear glaze, not without it. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means that no hazard labelling is required. You can fire clear glaze and underglaze in a single firing. If blisters or craters appear, Mayco says a hold time of 15 minutes helps.
