Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-019 Electra Blue – bright blue underglaze for ceramics

Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-019 Electra Blue is an underglaze in a strong, bright blue for decorating ceramics. You apply it with a brush to wet clay, bisque-fired ware or bisque, for designs, lettering, fine lines, patterns or solid areas. According to Mayco, it becomes opaque with 2–3 coats. Under a clear glaze it gives a deep, rich blue.

The colour belongs to the Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze series. Unglazed, it fires to a soft matt; with clear glaze the surface becomes glossy.

Working with the underglaze

Stir the colour well and apply it in 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry before applying the next. One coat gives more transparent lines, while opaque areas only come with 2–3 coats. After that there are two routes:

• On wet clay or bisque-fired ware: paint, fire to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart), glaze with a clear glaze and fire to cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
• On bisque: leave to dry, apply clear glaze and fire to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart)

Firing temperature and colour effect

Mayco gives cone 06 to cone 10 for the series (approx. 998 to 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). At cone 06, Electra Blue fires matt. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart, reduction), colour concentration occurs. A test tile will show you beforehand how the blue looks in your kiln. Fire the clear glaze at cone 06–05 for earthenware and at cone 5–10 for stoneware.

For dinnerware

For dinnerware, Electra Blue is only suitable under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without a clear glaze, this does not apply.
