Mayco Underglaze UG-225 Plum – rich plum purple for ceramics
Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-225 Plum is an underglaze in a rich plum purple, which you use to paint greenware or bisque. It is suitable for blocks of colour, outlines, floral ornaments and illustrative motifs. Without a glaze it fires to a matt finish. A clear or matt glaze intensifies the colour.
For dinnerware: Plum is only suitable for dinnerware under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without a clear glaze, it is not dinnerware safe. The AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI: non-hazardous (no labelling required).
Applying Plum
Plum goes on evenly and smoothly with a brush. For fine lines and for larger areas you use the same shade; you simply change the number of coats.
- Shake well before use.
- One coat looks translucent; 2–3 coats give full coverage according to Mayco.
- Let each coat dry before applying the next.
- The colours in the series can be mixed with each other.
- Do not spray.
- It can be applied to wet or leather-hard clay; it is then fired at cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart).
Firing and colour effect
Mayco gives a firing range from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidising firing, Plum stays unchanged according to Mayco. At cone 10 in a reduction firing, the shade shifts towards blue with purple marbling. If a particular effect matters to you, run a test first with your own clay and your own kiln.
You can combine underglaze and clear glaze in a single firing. If blisters or craters form, according to Mayco a hold time of 15 minutes helps.
