Mayco Underglaze UG-050 Jet Black – deep black underglaze for outlines and solid areas
Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-050 Jet Black is an intense black underglaze for outlines, lettering, silhouettes, patterns and opaque solid areas on ceramics. You paint it onto greenware or bisque and usually cover it with clear glaze afterwards. For patterns or full coverage, apply 2–3 coats.
According to Mayco, the firing range runs from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). This means you can use it for earthenware and for stoneware.
Using Jet Black
Stir the underglaze well before use and paint it on in 2–3 coats so that the black is opaque. There are two routes, depending on the surface:
- On bisque: let the coats dry, apply clear glaze and fire to cone 05 (approx. 1,031 °C, guide value per Orton chart).
- On greenware: apply the underglaze, fire to cone 04 (approx. 1,063 °C, guide value per Orton chart), then apply clear glaze and fire to cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart).
Colour after firing
Without glaze, Jet Black fires to a soft matt; under clear glaze the surface becomes glossy. At cone 06 the black stays matt. According to Mayco, at cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) the colour does not change and shows a slight sheen. For earthenware, fire the clear glaze at cone 06 to 05; for stoneware, Mayco recommends the clear glaze SW-001 Stoneware Clear. For tableware, or if you want a more intense colour, use a clear or matt-clear glaze.
Tableware only under clear glaze
The underglaze carries the ACMI AP (Approved Product) seal; according to ACMI, it is non-hazardous. For tableware it is only suitable under a transparent, tableware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without clear glaze it is not intended for tableware.
