Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-87 Ruby Slippers – red brush-on glaze for decorating

Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-87 Ruby Slippers lets you glaze ceramics in red: you brush the glossy, highly pigmented glaze onto damp clay or bisque. It is thick, and according to Mayco the colours do not run into one another. This means you can place lines, patterns and multicoloured designs right next to each other. The glaze fires glossy and needs no clear glaze over it.

According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means: non-hazardous (no labelling required).

Applying the glaze

Stir the glaze well before applying it. One coat gives a translucent result in which the surface underneath shows through. For full opacity, Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry before applying the next. Diluted with water, it gives wash and watercolour effects, and because the colours in the range can be mixed, you can create your own shades of red.

Firing and high firing

Stroke & Coat is designed to mature at cone 06/05, that is roughly cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). If you fire higher, for example stoneware at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), colours can change: according to Mayco, dark colours such as red, orange, yellow, blue and green become darker, while light ones such as beige, violet and pink fade. Make a test piece on your own clay first.
