Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-103 Lavendear – purple brush-on glaze for clay and bisque

Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-103 Lavendear is a purple ceramic glaze (236 ml) for brushing onto damp clay, bisque and stoneware. This thick, richly pigmented glaze stays where you put it and fires to a gloss finish. You do not need an additional clear glaze. That makes it practical for lines, details and multicoloured designs.

The number of coats controls the coverage: one coat is translucent, while 2–3 coats give opaque coverage. According to Mayco, Lavendear is semi-opaque at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidising firing and does not change colour. The Stroke & Coat colours can be mixed with one another. Thinned down, they give softer gradients and transparent effects.

Application and firing

Stir the glaze well before use and apply it with a soft brush to damp clay or bisque. Let each coat dry before applying the next. For intense coverage you need 2–3 coats; a single coat stays slightly transparent. Leave the foot of the piece free of glaze so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf. According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the ACMI AP seal denotes a product that requires no hazard labelling.

High firing: test first

In a high firing the Stroke & Coat colours behave differently: some become darker, others lighter, and the coverage can change. For Lavendear, Mayco states no colour change at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidising firing. If you combine it with other colours from the series, fire a test piece first using your own clay and your own firing programme.
