Mayco Stoneware SW-142 Gray Matte – grey matt stoneware glaze for ceramics
Mayco Stoneware SW-142 Gray Matte is a matt grey stoneware glaze for ceramics, fired in the stoneware range. At 1230 °C it produces a smooth, matt surface with a velvety feel. The container holds 473 ml. The calm grey suits modern, understated tableware and decorative ceramics.
You control the opacity through the number of coats. Applied thinly, the glaze lets the clay body show through, especially with dark and speckled clays. With three or more coats the result becomes more opaque and covers more evenly. According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe when you use it as directed by the manufacturer.
Firing and colour effect
The glaze is suitable for cone 5/6 in an oxidising firing and for cone 10 in a reducing firing. Cone 6 corresponds to approx. 1222 °C and cone 10 to approx. 1285 °C (guide values per Orton chart). According to Mayco, a true matt finish without flow is achieved in a glaze firing at cone 5/6. At 1230 °C the surface is smooth and matt. At 1305 °C the colour shifts to a blue-grey. So do not fire higher if you want to keep the neutral grey.
Application and choice
Stir the glaze thoroughly before use and apply it with a brush to clean, dust-free bisque-fired ware. Let each coat dry before you apply the next. Do not spray the glaze. A test tile made from your own clay shows you beforehand how many coats you need for the opacity you want. Gray Matte belongs to the Mayco Stoneware range, which is available in further colours. The grey is the choice for a calm, matt look rather than glossy surfaces.
- Thin: clay body shows through
- Three or more coats: more opaque, more covering
