Gütermann elastic thread – highly elastic for shirring and gathering

Gütermann elastic thread is a highly elastic sewing thread for gathered and shirred seams. You sew it into the sewing machine as the bobbin thread, and the fabric draws up into even gathers. The thread is made of 64% polyester and 36% polyurethane and is size No. 18. The 10 m is enough for projects such as sleeve cuffs, waistlines or rows of shirring on clothing and home decor. Choose your colour from the options.

As well as machine use, you can also carry the thread along as a cord when knitting and crocheting, according to Gütermann. It is intended for all fabrics and weaves.

Shirring with elastic thread

The elastic thread belongs only in the bobbin; it is not suitable as the top thread. Wind it onto the bobbin by hand without stretching it, otherwise it will gather unevenly later. Then sew several parallel rows at even intervals on the right side of the fabric, using ordinary sewing thread as the top thread and a longer stitch length. The fabric then draws up. Make a test piece from your fabric beforehand, as the amount of gathering varies depending on the fabric.

Other uses

As a carry-along yarn, you hold the thread together with your yarn when knitting or crocheting if cuffs or edges need more tension. The thread can also be used for decorative projects with gathered sections.
