Prym elastic sewing thread black – stretchy thread for shirring, knitting and crochet

Prym elastic sewing thread (art. no. 970010) in black is a stretchy yarn that you can use as a carry-along yarn when knitting and crocheting, or directly on the sewing machine. According to Prym, it is made of 50% elastane and 50% polyamide. The high elastane content makes it very stretchy, so cuffs, hats and wrist warmers stay elastic.

The thread is 0.5 mm thick and comes with 20 m already wound on a sewing machine bobbin. A groove in the base and in the lid of the bobbin holds the end of the thread in place while your work is resting. The thread is available in four colours: black, light grey, sand and white.

Using the elastic sewing thread

When knitting or crocheting, carry the thread along with the main yarn. This way cuffs and hat edges keep their stretch and pull back in after wearing. On the sewing machine, you can use it for shirring or to stabilise selected areas of the fabric.

• Knitting and crochet: work the thread together with the main yarn, for example for cuffs, hats and wrist warmers
• Sewing: insert the bobbin as the bottom thread, sew with a normal top thread and a long stitch length, and the fabric gathers
• Resting: tuck the end of the thread into the groove on the bobbin base or lid

Colour and quantity

Black blends in discreetly with dark yarns and fabrics. On light materials the thread may show through on shirring or cuffs, so light grey, sand or white is a better choice. With 20 m per bobbin, you can plan the quantity well for cuffs and smaller sewing projects.
