Botz stoneware glaze 9892 Salamander – satin black with mustard-yellow ring effects

Botz 9892 Salamander is a liquid, satin stoneware glaze for the firing range 1220–1280 °C. It gives a black base with fine mustard-yellow effects, often arranged in rings, and has good coverage. Fired within the firing range, the stoneware becomes frost-resistant and vitrified, so it does not absorb water.

The result depends on how much glaze you apply and on the firing temperature. At 1250 °C with three coats, the typical salamander effect appears. At 1280 °C the glaze turns into a satin-matt black with orange-brown effects.

Application and firing

Stir the glaze well before use, apply it with a brush and let each coat dry thoroughly. The number of coats depends on the firing temperature, because it changes the result considerably.

• Application: 2–3 coats, three coats at 1250 °C, only two at 1280 °C
• Firing range: 1220–1280 °C
• Recommended firing temperature: 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold
• 1250 °C: salamander effect with three coats
• 1280 °C: satin-matt black with orange-brown effects

Avoiding runs and combining glazes

Salamander tends to run, especially at 1280 °C and with a thicker application. So do not apply the glaze too thickly on the lower part of the piece, and leave the base unglazed. It combines well with the Botz glazes 9896, 9876, 9873, 9890 and 9889, for example as a rim or inside glaze. A test piece will show you beforehand how application and temperature behave in your kiln.
