Botz 9352 Craquelé turquoise liquid glaze – glossy crackle glaze for earthenware
Botz liquid glaze 9352 Craquelé turquoise is a glossy, semi-transparent crackle glaze in light blue to turquoise. As it cools, it forms a fine network of cracks, which you can colour afterwards. The glaze is stable in the firing range of 1020 to 1060 °C and is also suitable for raku.
The glaze tends to run a lot. Apply it only once and not too thickly: the crackle structure then stays clean and the glaze does not run onto the kiln shelf.
Application and firing
Stir the glaze well and thin it with a little water if needed. Brush it onto bisque-fired ceramics and leave it to dry thoroughly. The glaze must be applied only once, as otherwise it runs too much.
- A bisque firing at 1000 °C avoids bubbling; bisque firing must be at 950 °C at least
- Firing range: 1020–1060 °C
- On some clays the glaze tends to bubble when applied on both sides, so glaze only one side if possible
How the crackle forms and shows
The cracks usually form as the piece cools in the kiln and become more pronounced over time. This can take up to a week. If no cracks appear, the piece can be taken out of the kiln at approx. 100 °C and quenched in cold water. To make the network of cracks visible, colour it in, for example with black ink, coloured acrylic paints or strong black tea.
Thick application and running
With a somewhat thicker application on horizontal surfaces, such as the inside of plates and bowls, a darker turquoise scale crackle forms on some clays. Because the glaze runs a lot, leave a margin free at the foot of the piece and protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash. A test piece on your own clay will show you beforehand how the cracks and colour behave for you.
