Mayco SG-202 White Cobblestone – white textured glaze with a scale pattern

Mayco SG-202 White Cobblestone is a textured glaze for ceramics. When fired, it forms a raised, rectangular, scale-like white surface, similar to cobblestones. The amount you apply determines how the pattern looks: a thicker application gives large breaks, a thinner one small breaks. The bottle contains 118 ml.

At cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in oxidation, it produces a white, fractured pattern of raised, irregular scales. The glaze underneath shows through the cracks. At cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in oxidation, the glaze beads up on the surface. If you apply it over another glaze, the texture smooths out and shows a similar cobblestone pattern. For cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in reduction, Mayco gives the same behaviour as at cone 6.

Applying the glaze

Stir the glaze well and apply it with a soft, wide brush or a sponge. The crackle pattern follows the direction of the brushstrokes, so keep your strokes even. If applied too thinly, the glaze will not break up. Touching up afterwards does not create a crackle pattern, so work in one go.

• Apply two coats, the second onto the still-wet first coat
• Thicker application: large breaks; thinner application: small breaks
• Also possible over glaze that has already been fired; the pattern is more pronounced on unfired glaze
• Do not spray
• Dried glaze tends to flake off, so handle it carefully

Firing and testing

Fire from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Higher firings are possible but change the result: the scale pattern turns into beads. Test the glaze before use on a test piece made from your own clay body in your own kiln. SG-201 Black Cobblestone, with a black pattern, is available to match.
