Clover 18 mm Bias Tape Maker – Make Fusible Bias Binding Yourself
With the Clover 18 mm (3/4") bias tape maker (art. no. 4014), you can make fusible bias binding from any fabric you like. This lets you make it in exactly the colour or pattern you want. The binding is intended for edging, piping and appliqué.
The principle: the fusible web goes into the upper channel of the maker, and the fabric strip cut on the bias goes into the lower channel. You pull both materials through the maker at the same time and iron them as you go. Then you peel off the backing paper of the fusible web and apply the finished binding. You can also use the maker to make bias binding without fusible web.
Working with the maker
Cut the fabric at a 45° angle to the grain so that the binding stretches later and follows curves. Press the fabric flat beforehand.
- Place the fusible web in the upper channel
- Place the fabric strip cut on the bias in the lower channel
- Pull the maker slowly and fix the material with the iron directly behind it
- Peel off the backing paper, position the binding and iron it on
Which size and which web?
For the 18 mm maker, Clover specifies fusible web 10 mm wide. The 6 mm and 9 mm makers in the range need 5 mm wide web, while the 12 mm and 25 mm makers, like this one, need 10 mm. According to Clover, with 5 mm web the 18 mm maker can also be used to make piping tape for basting. The range covers sizes from 6 to 25 mm. It is intended, among other things, for lattice and grid patterns in quilting, for piping and for flower appliqués made from bias binding. The maker can get hot while you iron, so do not touch it directly behind the iron.
