White bias binding 40/20 – sold by the metre

Use this bias binding to finish curved edges, for example necklines on T-shirts and dresses or the edges of table linen and bed linen. Because it is cut on the bias, it stretches slightly and follows curves. The tape is pre-folded. It is sold by the metre, cut to the length you need.

What does 40/20 mean?

The first number is the width of the tape opened out, the second is the width with the edges folded in: 40 mm open, 20 mm folded. If you fold it once more down the middle for binding, about 10 mm of tape lies on each side of the fabric.

Binding an edge

• Open out one fold and pin the tape to the fabric edge, right sides together.
• Sew along the fold line.
• Wrap the tape around the edge to the wrong side of the fabric so that it just covers the seam.
• Topstitch the tape in place close to the edge.

On inner curves such as necklines, stretch the tape slightly as you sew it on so that it lies flat and does not wrinkle. Measure the edge before ordering and allow a few centimetres extra for the ends.
