Clover 9 mm Bias Tape Maker – make your own fusible bias tape

With the Clover 9 mm bias tape maker (3/8 in, art. no. 4012) you can turn fabric strips into fusible bias tape in the fabric you need. The tape then matches your project exactly, instead of you having to choose from ready-made colours.

The maker belongs to the Clover Fusible Bias Tape Maker series. According to Clover, you use fusible web (hot-melt tape) 5 mm wide for the 6 and 9 mm sizes. For the small sizes, Clover lists uses such as lattice and network patterns in quilting, piping and three-dimensional flower appliqués made from bias tape. Without fusible web, the maker can also be used to make ordinary bias binding.

Making fusible bias tape

Cut the fabric into strips on the bias, at an angle to the grain. Then proceed as follows:

  • Place the fusible web in the upper channel of the maker
  • Feed the bias-cut fabric strip into the lower channel
  • Pull both materials through the maker at the same time, ironing as you go
  • Peel off the backing tape and apply the finished tape

Which size to choose

The series comes in sizes 6, 9, 12, 18 and 25 mm. For 6 and 9 mm you need 5 mm wide fusible web, whereas for 12, 18 and 25 mm you need 10 mm. For the small sizes, Clover mentions mainly quilting work such as stained-glass and Celtic quilts, as well as network patterns. Before cutting a larger quantity, make a test piece from a fabric scrap to see how easily your fabric feeds through the maker.
