addiEi – hand-cranked knitting mill for extra thick I-cords
The addiEi from addi is a small knitting machine (knitting mill) with 6 needles. You can use it to crank out extra thick knitted cords, known as I-cords. The cord grows longer round by round as you turn the handle. Photo instructions for use take you step by step through casting on and working.
The addiEi is designed for yarn 3–5 mm thick. It lets you knit thicker yarns too, without having to work a long knitted cord by hand.
Working with the addiEi
Wrap the yarn around the needles following the photo instructions, then turn the handle. The machine forms stitches continuously, and the cord grows out of the bottom of the device. A small weight at the lower end of the cord keeps it evenly tensioned while you crank. Turn the handle steadily and without jerking so that the stitches come out even. If a mistake occurs, it helps to unpick a short way and put the stitches back on the needles instead of carrying on cranking.
Which yarn and what for?
Use yarn 3–5 mm thick and the machine will work reliably. Very thin yarns produce a loose cord that quickly becomes uneven. Smooth, evenly spun yarns run through the needles better than very fluffy ones. You can coil the finished cord and sew it into coasters or cushion covers, or use it as a thick strand for scarves and hats.
