BeaverCraft AX6 – hand-forged long-beard hatchet for woodwork and carving
The BeaverCraft AX6 is a compact, hand-forged hatchet with a long beard for camping, bushcraft tasks and wood carving. The blade is made of 1066 carbon steel at 56–58 HRC and has a convex grind with a slightly curved edge that allows deep cuts. The hatchet is supplied sharp.
The ash handle is impregnated with linseed oil and wax, which makes it more resistant to the weather. With an overall length of approx. 29.5 cm and a 9 cm cutting edge, the hatchet is small enough for controlled one-handed work. A cowhide leather sheath with a belt loop is included and protects the edge during storage.
Working with the hatchet
To split kindling or small logs, stand the wood on a stable chopping block. Always keep your free hand behind the edge and out of the line of the swing. For carving, grip the handle close to the head. The long beard leaves room for your hand right behind the edge, so you can guide the hatchet more precisely for details such as notches or sharpening the ends of pieces of wood. Work with short, controlled cuts so that the blade does not wander.
- Chopping: wood on a solid block, free hand out of the line of the swing
- Carving: grip the handle close to the head, short cuts
- After use, put the edge in the sheath once the blade and leather are dry
Care of blade and handle
Carbon steel rusts if it stays damp. Wipe the blade dry after use and apply a thin film of oil. Store the hatchet in a dry place and not permanently in a damp leather sheath. The ash handle stays in good condition if you treat it with a thin coat of linseed oil when needed.
