The Edpas carving set consists of two solid limewood blocks, each measuring 7 × 7 × 20 cm. You can carve figures, animals or small reliefs from them. Carving templates are included, so you can get started straight away.

Lime is a soft, even wood with a fine grain. The knife glides easily through the wood, and mistakes made in the first cuts stay manageable. That is why limewood suits beginners, and experienced carvers also like to use it for detail work.

Carving step by step

Transfer the template to the block with a pencil and first remove the rough shape with larger cuts. Cut with the grain, not across it, otherwise the wood will tear out. Guide the knife away from your body and never place the hand holding the block in front of the blade. Only then work out details such as the face or feathers with short, shallow cuts. A sharp blade is important: a blunt knife is more likely to slip and needs more force.

Which size to choose

At 7 × 7 × 20 cm, you have enough volume for larger figures with a base. For small practice figures, the same range includes blocks measuring 2.5 × 2.5 × 10 cm in a pack of 10.
